New federal funding may help remedy historical deficits in mental health
Jul 26, 2017
The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ontario is pleased that the federal government and the Government of Ontario have reached a health funding agreement, which includes new targeted funding over 10 years for investments in mental health care.
The Government of Canada has agreed to provide the province with an additional $4.2 billion, with $1.9 billion to be used in support of mental health initiatives and $2.3 billion for better home care.
“We believe these additional funds will begin to remedy the historical funding deficits that have impacted those individuals and their families struggling with mental health and addictions challenges,” said Camille Quenneville, CEO of CMHA Ontario in a statement.
“The burden of mental illness and addictions is one and a half times that of cancer and seven times that of all infectious diseases. Helping Ontarians maintain their mental wellness, cope with daily mental health challenges or diagnosed illnesses can drive cost savings for the entire health system.”
The targeted investments in home care and mental health care are in addition to the existing legislated commitments through the Canada Health Transfer (CHT), which the federal government promises will continue to grow into the future.
