Amalia’s story — CMHA PEI
Apr 6, 2018
Amalia has struggled with her mental health her whole life. When she became really ill in 2015, she was hospitalized for a month.
Her family and a few close friends stuck by her, and when she was ready to go home, she made the daily trek to CMHA PEI’s Fitzroy Centre Clubhouse and became a member.
Amalia started to see a worker at the Clubhouse, which supports individuals with mental illnesses to rebuild their self-confidence and find new ground. And that’s just what Amalia did: she flourished.
With help from the Clubhouse Employment Program, Amalia re-started her own successful business—Amalia’s Tutoring.
Her confidence has come back, and Amalia has ventured into a new sphere: the world of public speaking. Last year, she shared her personal story at an international conference.
The staff and members of the Clubhouse are an essential part of her support system and have shown her the power of connection. She brings this power to connect with people when she stands in front of an audience, and makes them feel connected to her. Through Amalia, people are inspired.
Amalia’s story is just one of many community stories we are highlighting in honour of #CMHA100, a national celebration of 100 years of community mental health in Canada. To learn more, or to find resources near you, please visit https://cmha.ca/find-your-cmha.
