Dec 19, 2016
(Ottawa) – At the Ottawa 67’s home game on Jan. 30, the 67’s and the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ottawa Branch (CMHA Ottawa) are teaming up in a game day event to raise awareness about the importance of mental health. The game day is part of the Talk Today awareness campaign that aims to promote the mental health of young athletes and raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention.
Announced last fall, Talk Today is a partnership between the Ontario Hockey League and the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario to provide mental health support to players and raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention throughout OHL communities.
To date, players on all 20 OHL teams have received mental health training specific to suicide awareness. Each team is also now linked to a CMHA Mental Health Coach, who can provide support and mental health resources to individuals in need.
In Ottawa, CMHA Ottawa has provided safeTALK training to the 67’s general manager and all coaches, trainers and players.
“One in five youth struggle with mental health issues In Ontario,” says CMHA Ottawa’s mental health coach with the 67’s, Andrew Fainer.
Mr. Fainer says that the members of the 67’s play leadership roles with in the community and players are seen as excellent role models who positively influence young hockey fans and their families.
