Understanding the Unspoken Pain

An awareness workshop on providing initial assistance to survivors of war trauma and torture. CMHA Ottawa developed this training for people who come into regular contact with refugees. This one-day workshop introduces participants to the basics of initial response, focusing on the historical and current incidence of torture and war trauma and their physical, psychological and social consequences. Participants also learn about resources, strategies and how to make referrals to appropriate services to help survivors. This participatory workshop includes lectures, group discussions, audio-visual materials and role plays.

This training will be of particular interest to teachers and administrators, and health, mental health and social service professionals. Currently offered at CMHA in English, the workshop is available in French on request. It can also be adapted for other settings.
